Shifting from Windows to OS X makes lots of simple tasks ridiculously hard. Since I was thought by Windows that installing things on WordPress localhost installation shall be easy, it took me a lot of temper and power to bite into my lips and start searching for solution.

After first attempt to install on WordPress localhost plugin I got this error:

Connection Information
To perform the requested action, WordPress needs to access your web server. Please enter your FTP credentials to proceed. If you do not remember your credentials, you should contact your web host.

Solution:

Step 1.

Put into config.php define(‘FS_METHOD’, ‘direct’); Parameter “direct” forces use of Direct File I/O requests from within PHP. Delete this line if you copy your whole WordPress installation on life host (security treat).

Step 2.

Unfortunately this is not all. When you download the theme or plugin it will not create the directory inside your folder.

It is necessary to change permission on main folder of WordPress installation.

In order to change the folder permission you need to right click on the root folder directory of your site. Click “Get Info” and unlock (bottom right) access. by giving your admin password. Change permission settings for your folder according picture below and click on the gear icon “apply to enclosed items”.

I have been trying locally on XAMPP develop new custom WordPress theme. I choose to implement custom font on titles with help of Adobe Typekit fonts. It took me nearly 2 hours to solve problem with not showing fonts nowhere locally. I tied every possible scenario, I changed everything what I thought might be a cause.

And solution? Well, bug was in Typekit font Kit settings. Domain of usage contained only web domain, not a localhost IP addressI. I would give a recommendation to Typekit – Make first-time users a tour around product instead of small gray hints.

For example: “*.nytimes.com, localhost, 127.0.0.1”

If you just switched from PC to Mac, many things are new for you. Even WordPress errors. You can quickly start being frustrated from beginning when even things which used to be easy on Windows are now hard on Mac. Updating local WordPress installation is one of them.

When I had tried to update WordPress on my XAMPP, updating process thrown an error about denying of file change. The solution for problem is actually very simple and its root is in a way how OS X manage files. OS X is based UNIX so every update/download of WordPress installation require permission to write and update files. This can be easily fixed setting read and write rights for all groups at WordPress installation folder. Just type following command to terminal
$sudo chmod -R 777 /Applications/XAMPP/htdocs/YOUR_WORDPRESS_INSTALATION
and all subfolder and files within your WordPress installation will recursively set themselves for rewritable by all groups.

This is actually terrible solution for public server from point of security. But at local network, I guess, setting access to 777 just for specific folder does not consider any harm or potential treat.
