Shifting from Windows to OS X makes lots of simple tasks ridiculously hard. Since I was thought by Windows that installing things on WordPress localhost installation shall be easy, it took me a lot of temper and power to bite into my lips and start searching for solution.

After first attempt to install on WordPress localhost plugin I got this error:

Connection Information
To perform the requested action, WordPress needs to access your web server. Please enter your FTP credentials to proceed. If you do not remember your credentials, you should contact your web host.

Solution:

Step 1.

Put into config.php define(‘FS_METHOD’, ‘direct’); Parameter “direct” forces use of Direct File I/O requests from within PHP. Delete this line if you copy your whole WordPress installation on life host (security treat).

Step 2.

Unfortunately this is not all. When you download the theme or plugin it will not create the directory inside your folder.

It is necessary to change permission on main folder of WordPress installation.

In order to change the folder permission you need to right click on the root folder directory of your site. Click “Get Info” and unlock (bottom right) access. by giving your admin password. Change permission settings for your folder according picture below and click on the gear icon “apply to enclosed items”.

If you just switched from PC to Mac, many things are new for you. Even WordPress errors. You can quickly start being frustrated from beginning when even things which used to be easy on Windows are now hard on Mac. Updating local WordPress installation is one of them.

When I had tried to update WordPress on my XAMPP, updating process thrown an error about denying of file change. The solution for problem is actually very simple and its root is in a way how OS X manage files. OS X is based UNIX so every update/download of WordPress installation require permission to write and update files. This can be easily fixed setting read and write rights for all groups at WordPress installation folder. Just type following command to terminal
$sudo chmod -R 777 /Applications/XAMPP/htdocs/YOUR_WORDPRESS_INSTALATION
and all subfolder and files within your WordPress installation will recursively set themselves for rewritable by all groups.

This is actually terrible solution for public server from point of security. But at local network, I guess, setting access to 777 just for specific folder does not consider any harm or potential treat.

During upgrade of my WordPress on newer 3.2.1 version I’ve got an installation error. It was caused by version of used PHP version on side of server. Error looked like this:

An update version of WordPress is available.

You cannot update because WordPress 3.2.1 requires PHP version 5.2.1 or higher. You are running version 4.4.9.

While your sire is being updated, it will be in maintenance mode. As soon as you updates are complete, your sire will return to normal.

I’ve fixed this issue by simple command. In administration of my webhosting provider I’ve writen .php in space, which used to be blank (red rectangle). Files of .php are now executed under version of PHP 5.3 .

My webhosting provider is websupport.sk. But I am sure this simple trick will be working everywhere. Even when it looks little bit confusing it works. Upgrade was succesfull.

Additional information
If I delete .php from PHP 5.3 row after successfull installation, I get message on my blog:

Your server is running PHP version 4.4.9 but version 3.2.1 requires at least 5.2.4

If it is working, it is O.K. ;D

I am currently in state of rebuilding the budystudio.com web page and I wanted to add new section ‘design”. New fresh WordPress installation was needed. I classified myself as skilled WordPress installer but I have never encounter error which occurred during this installation. When I typed installation address I got clear white page. Just nothing, no sign of what is going on. HTML code of page was blank.

There was no error about database connection problem or any other sign that server register my request for installation page. Source code was not helpful and I have therefore no clue what is wrong.

After hour of surfing over internet and looking for right answer I figure it out. Whole problem was just in wrong password for connection with database on side of my webhosting. Since I am using special characters, capital letters and numbers and have installed 2 different keyboards (EN,SK), when there is ************** security in typing the password I can not be never so sure what I am exactly writing.

When you have same problem during installation as me I suggest you to look up and check if password in wp-config.php is same as password for connection with database on your web-hosting provider.
